The Pet Expert

Dog parks can be amazing spaces for socialisation and exercise but they aren’t always the right fit for every dog. Here’s how to assess the environment before letting your pup off-leash.

Who’s in the Park?

Before entering, take a moment to observe the dogs already there.
- Are they calm and playing appropriately?
- Is there a mix of sizes and temperaments?
- Are any dogs showing signs of rough-housing or multiple dogs chasing one dog?

If the energy looks too intense or there are dogs that might overwhelm yours, it’s best to wait or find a quieter time.

How Busy Is It?

A crowded dog park can be chaotic. While some dogs thrive in high-energy environments, others may struggle. Ask yourself:
- Is my dog comfortable around large groups?
- Is there enough space to move around freely?
- Are multiple dogs ganging up in play? (This can quickly escalate into a problem.)

A well-balanced park should allow dogs to interact without feeling trapped or overwhelmed.

Are Owners Monitoring Their Dogs?

A dog park is only safe if the owners are responsible. Look around:
- Are people actively supervising their dogs, or are they distracted?
- Are they intervening if play gets too rough?
- Is there an understanding of basic dog behaviour, or are problems being ignored?

If owners seem absent or disengaged, it’s a sign to be cautious.

How Reliable Is Your Dog’s Recall?

If your dog isn’t 100% reliable on recall, a dog park might not be the best place to practice. Before entering:
- Test recall from increasing distances in a safe, enclosed area.
- Use high-value treats to reinforce coming back.
- If recall is weak, consider using a long training lead for control.

At a dog park, distractions are everywhere, make sure your dog listens even when excited.

Final Thoughts

Dog parks can be a fantastic opportunity for socialisation and exercise, but they require good judgement. By assessing the environment and ensuring your dog is prepared, you’ll create a safe and positive experience for everyone involved.
